The School Day
Life at St Nicholas is full of exciting challenges. Each child is encouraged to aim for a high standard of academic achievement in a well-structured, disciplined and stimulating environment.
When children enter the between 08:30 and 08:50 they know that their teacher is waiting for them in the classroom. This is a great opportunity for the children to catch-up on any unfinished work and get answers to questions with the support of the teacher.
Children in Reception, Years 1 and 2 have three work sessions and two short breaks in the morning. Children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 have four lessons and one central break.
Children eat lunch in rotation at 1230 or 1300 each day, and are supervised by lunchtime staff. Whilst pupils are invited to bring in their own packed lunches, we also offer hot meals through The Yum Yum Food Company. These meals are delivered to the School each morning, and we use this time to reinforce table manners and use of a knife and fork. Details on the meals provided can be found at https://www.yumyumfoodcompany.co.uk/, and a sample menu is available on https://www.yumyumfoodcompany.co.uk/pdf-menu/. Parents wishing to register their pupils for hot lunches should please use the attached form and return it to School.
For those pupils bringing a packed lunch, we spend time in a range of lessons discussing healthy eating with pupils to help them to understand the importance of a balanced diet. As such, we ask that chocolate, crisps and fizzy drinks are not included in a child's packed lunch. Please also note that we are a nut-free School.
Before or after lunch the children enjoy a break in the school playground before returning to the classroom for afternoon lessons. The timetable is similar for both age groups.
At the end of the day, the children have the choice of going home at 15:30 (Reception class at 15:15), staying for available clubs or activities (three days per week) or staying on at school until as late as 17:30 in Aftercare.
Aftercare staff provide a wholesome snack and a myriad of games and activities. Older children are also able to finish their homework in Aftercare. If it is warm, children can play outside. Please contact us if you are interested in our Aftercare provision.
