Sport provides a wonderful opportunity for pupils to develop new skills, experience challenges and develop resilience and respect. As such, it is a hugely important part of life at St Nicholas’, and we recognize the role it has in our aim to educate the whole child.
Every child enjoys timetabled PE lessons. We encourage each child to understand the important role that physical exercise has on a fit and healthy lifestyle, in a fun, positive and stimulating environment. This also encourages each child to extend their physical skills and work towards achieving their potential.
The variety of sports on offer includes athletics, cricket, cross country, football, netball, orienteering, tennis, and hockey. Qualified swimming instructors take the children from Year 3 – 6 for weekly lessons at the local leisure centre.
Alongside providing opportunities for pupils to develop their own physical abilities and experience competition in lessons, we take part in fixtures against other schools in football and netball, allowing pupils the chance to compete against peers. This competitive element has an incredibly positive effect on the development of skills, as well as linking closely to a number of our Core Values.
Every child participates in our annual Sports Day held in July at the games field, here they take on a rotation of individual and team events to earn points for their house team. The winning team is presented with the Sports Shield in front of parents and friends who have supported all the competitors during the afternoon.
